Your espresso machine's boiler holds steam under pressure. By law it needs a written scheme of examination and regular inspection by a competent person. Lost track of when yours is due? Call us now and we'll get you booked in, inspected and certified.

  • £420 + VAT per machine
  • Written scheme of examination included
  • Certificate for your records and your insurer

Missed it? Don't panic. Do this.

  1. 1

    Find your last certificate

Check the date and look for your written scheme of examination. No paperwork at all? That's fine, tell us.

  2. 2

    Call or book with us

Ring 01279 452110 or use the form below. We'll book the earliest slot we can.

  3. 3

    We inspect and certify

We draw up your written scheme if you don't have one, examine the pressure system and give you the certificate.

Safety first: if the safety valve keeps venting, the pressure gauge sits outside its normal range, or you can see steam or water escaping from the boiler, switch the machine off and call us. Don't keep trading on it.

The law, in plain English

Is a PVI a legal requirement?

Yes. Commercial espresso machines and bean-to-cup machines with a steam boiler are pressure systems under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR). If your business uses one, you must:

  • have a written scheme of examination for the machine, drawn up by a competent person
  • have the machine examined by a competent person at the intervals that scheme sets
  • keep the certificate as part of your records and risk assessment
  • maintain the machine and its safety devices properly between examinations

Environmental health officers and the HSE enforce these rules. Skipping them puts your staff and customers at risk, can lead to enforcement action, and can affect your insurance cover.

Who's responsible?

The business that uses the machine. That means you, whether you own it, lease it or it came with the coffee contract. If you're not sure who's arranging your PVI, assume nobody is and check.

Isn't my service enough?

No. A routine service keeps the machine running. A PVI is a separate statutory examination of the pressure system, with its own paperwork.

What can go wrong?

Steam under pressure can cause scalds and burns and, if safety devices fail, a dangerous release of pressure. The inspection is there to catch it first.

Questions

Pressure vessel inspection FAQs

Is a pressure vessel inspection a legal requirement for a coffee machine?

Yes. Commercial espresso machines and bean-to-cup machines with a steam boiler are pressure systems under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. The business using the machine must have a written scheme of examination and have the machine examined by a competent person at the intervals the scheme sets.

How often does a coffee machine need a PVI?

As often as your written scheme of examination says. For commercial espresso machines this is commonly every 12 to 14 months. If you can't remember when yours was last done, treat it as overdue and book one.

What is a written scheme of examination?

It's a document, drawn up by a competent person, that sets out which parts of your machine's pressure system must be examined, how, and how often. It's included in our £420 + VAT PVI if you don't already have one.

Who is responsible for the PVI: me, my landlord or my coffee supplier?

The business that uses the machine. That applies whether you own, lease or rent it, or it came as part of a coffee contract. Check who is arranging it. If nobody is, it falls to you.

I've missed my PVI. What should I do?

Book one now. Call us on 01279 452110 or use the form on this page and we'll book the earliest slot we can. If the safety valve is venting, the gauge is out of its normal range or the boiler is leaking, switch the machine off until it has been checked.

Does a normal service count as a PVI?

No. A service keeps the machine working well. A PVI is a separate statutory examination of the pressure system, recorded with its own certificate. Our Gold service plan includes the annual PVI, so both are covered.

How much does a PVI cost?

£420 + VAT per machine, including the written scheme of examination and the certificate. The first PVI is free with every new machine we install that has a pressure vessel.

Which machines do you inspect?

The brands we're official partners for and carry parts for: La Marzocco, Nuova Simonelli, Victoria Arduino, Thermoplan and Modbar. For another make, call us and we'll tell you whether we can help.

Do you cover London?

Yes. Our engineers work from our Harlow service centre and cover London and the South East. Further afield, call us with your postcode and we'll confirm.
